A Message From The Principal | MR. T.S. REDDY

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers

As we come to the end of the third term, I do believe that we all need a well-deserved break. I want to thank the hard-working and dedicated staff that I am privileged to lead, for all their efforts this term.

Thank you to all those learners who have participated in the wide range of activities this past term, to support the school and to build closer relations with the community at large.

Ahead of what will once again be a very busy fourth term, I would like to bring some upcoming events and important information to your attention:

• Monday, 16 October – Announcement of Executive Leaders 2024 at a Special Assembly
• Thursday, 19 October – Grade 12 Speech and Awards Final Assembly
• Monday, 30 October- Final NSC Examinations, Grade 12 begin.
• Tuesday, 31 October- Annual General Meeting and presentation of the 2024 school budget
• Wednesday, 08 November- Grade 8 to 11 Final Examinations start
• Tuesday, 28 November – Grade 8 to 11 Examinations end
• Monday, 04 December - Final NSC Examinations end.
• Wednesday, 13 December- Grade 8 to 11 Final Awards Assembly.
• Friday, 15 December – School Closes for 2023.

The term 3 Grade 8 to 11 reports will be issued on the last day of term – Friday, 29 September. The Grade 12s will receive their reports on Friday, 13 October.

During this term, we unfortunately had to bid farewell to six members of staff: Mr. V. Tilak (Business Studies Educator) took on a teaching post in China, Ms. Cele (Maths Educator) resigned as of the end of term 3, Mr. D. Naidu (Maths Educator) filled in as a locum teacher, Mrs. C. Munro (PA to the Principal) retired as of the start of September, Mrs. M. Chetty (Debtors Clerk) occupied a temporary post in the Finance Department and Ms. N. Fouche (English Intern) will take up a teaching post at a local school in the fourth term. We do wish them the very best in the new phase of their lives and thank each member of staff for their valuable contribution made to our school.

We welcome the following staff to the NGHS family: Mrs J. Walters (PA to the Principal), Mrs. C. Sarabeah (Business Studies Educator) and Mr. L. Mbambe (Maths Educator). I do trust that we will have a long and successful journey together. We also welcome back from maternity leave, Mrs. O. Poonsamy (Debtors Clerk) and Mrs. M. Heslop (Maths Educator). The fourth term is an examination term.

The Final Examination counts for a high percentage of the final promotion mark. Proper time management (and other factors) play a vital role in ensuring success in these examinations. Please assist your daughter in drawing up a study time-table, eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep. This will help to prevent any unnecessary stress and anxiety during the examination period. Parents, I do look forward to your continued support at school.

God bless, and please stay safe.
Mr. T.S. Reddy

A Message From The Counselling Department

The term began with a successful Career Expo held on Wednesday, 26 July 2023. There was a vibrant atmosphere as Grade 9 to 12s engaged in interactive discussions with Exhibitors from around 40 Public and Private Tertiary Institutions/ Departments and Companies. Professional Alumni were also invited to give learners first-hand accounts on working or studying in their respective fields. We trust that learners embraced the opportunity to gather information on various career options. We hope that this event, in conjunction with Subject Choice Evening, has contributed toward Grade 9s making informed decisions regarding subject choice for Grade 10.

Some of our Grade 9 to 11 learners signed up for GIRLCAD, which is a UKZN SAIMechE initiative. GIRLCAD aims to promote STEM among females as well as the preparation of learners for first year university engineering modules. Currently, learners are attending 3 Saturday sessions, which started on 9 September 2023. As Northlands Girls’ High School introduces EGD as a choice subject in 2024, we hope that these sessions aid the Grade 9s attending, to prepare for EGD next year.

Presentations to Grade 8s and 9s on Bullying were conducted during Grade Assemblies. We encourage the inculcation of values such as kindness, compassion, trustworthiness and respect in all our learners. We also promote a culture of inclusivity and a celebration of uniqueness. We encourage parents to help us uphold these values.

As we prepare for Term 4, we plan is to highlight October as Mental Health Awareness Month through various initiatives. We encourage parents to create open conversations around Mental Health to help break the stigma that surrounds it. Parents should guard against unrealistic expectations of their children regarding academics and avoid comparisons. We also encourage fostering an accepting and safe environment within the home.
