Have a look at all the highlights from NGHS in Term 2...

A Message From The Principal | MR. T.S. REDDY

Dear Parents, Caregivers, and Learners,

We have reached the end of the second term, and unlike previous years, this term has been remarkably uninterrupted, with most of the usual second-term public holidays falling either during the weekends or during the school holidays. This fortunate circumstance has given us the opportunity to teach the syllabus without any disruptions, allowing for our girls to receive adequate preparation for the mid-year examinations. The over-all results this year has been generally better than the previous year. The Academic Reports for Term 2 will be handed to the girls on Friday, 14 June 2024.

We extend a sincere welcome to two new members of staff to our NGHS family. Firstly, we are joined in the Life Sciences and Natural Sciences department by Mrs. G. Crossan, who has a wealth of experience teaching these subjects. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact that she will have on our girls.

Additionally, Ms. N. Miya will join us at the start of the third term, as our second school counselor. Her expertise and compassionate approach will be instrumental in supporting the well-being and growth of our girls.

We wish our new staff a long and prosperous stay at NGHS and look forward to the contributions they will make in the years to come.

The third term will be a fast-paced one, especially for our grade 12 girls, as they prepare for their preliminary examinations in August. To support their progress, we have scheduled a winter school program for the first week of the holiday. We encourage your daughter in grade 12 to attend this program.

Girls, you all deserve a restful and rejuvenating break. I encourage you to take this time to recharge, spend quality time with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. We look forward to seeing you back at school on the 9th of July, ready to take on the challenges of the new term.

Parents, we really do appreciate and value your continued support and co-operation. Together, let us continue to build upon our tradition of excellence and provide our girls with the best possible education.

Wishing you all a wonderful break.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. T.S. Reddy

A Message From The Counselling Department

We have arrived at the mid-year mark. We trust that Grade 8s have been adapting to High School thus far, and that their first High School Exam has not been too daunting. Parents are urged to support and encourage their daughters even if they have not met their expectations this term. Far too many learners are experiencing high levels of anxiety before and through the examination period. School needs to be a positive space where learners can learn from their mistakes and not just grow but also thrive. Adults have the responsibility to create that positive space both at school and in the home. Learners need to develop healthy ways of coping with stress and participation in a sport or extracurricular activity is one of the trusted ways of coping.

The highlights of this term include the University Of Free State (UFS) networking breakfast in April. Five of our top achievers from Grade 11 and 12 were treated to a talk by the Vice Chancellor of the University, had the opportunity to network with top achievers from other schools and got to enjoy a scrumptious breakfast at Coastlands on the Ridge. In May, some of our learners also attended an interactive workshop on rockets and rocketry, to mark the official launch of the UKZN Aerospace Systems Research Institute (ASRI), hosted by the School of Engineering. This workshop was aimed at learners considering a career in engineering and aerospace systems. Rhodes University also presented to our matric learners this term and shared their requirements and application procedures.

Grade 9s completed their Career Interest Tests during the exam period. This has sparked conversations and thinking around subject choice and future careers. Grade 9s can also use their June examination results as an indication of their strengths. We trust that the events planned for next term will generate further discussion on subject choice and provide guidance toward an informed decision.

We wish learners a restful holiday and hope that you allow time to reflect on your progress this term. Remember to be positive and tenacious in the pursuit of your goals.

Kind regards,
Ms. D. Powell
School Counsellor

A Message From The Media Centre

The first term has been a busy one for the NGHS Media Centre.

  • We prepared for our Open Day in February, where prospective parents came to look at all that NGHS offers.
  • We celebrated Valentine’s Day with a poetry competition. After reading all the amazing words of love we eventually awarded first place to Thandoluhle Dlamini in Gr 10, second to Sarah Fraser in Gr 12 and third to Elaine Chirobi in Gr 11. Well done to everyone who contributed.
  • We also watched 2 episodes of the newly released Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which the girls really enjoyed.
  • Some of our displays this term included – Chinese New Year celebrating the very special Year of the Golden Dragon, World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March, A look at NGHS over the past 75 years and Black Authors in the month of February.
  • We have introduced a display, which is changed monthly, of books recommended by The Paperbacks – our school Book Club. Remember to come down and see what they have put out as good reads!
  • We will also be starting an Author of the Month display from next term – highlighting one new author every month. This is to encourage girls to diversify their reading and try out new authors and genres.
  • Our Monitor of the Month for February was Melokuhle Gumede and March was Elaine Chirobi. Well done ladies and thanks so much for all the hard work!

A Message From The Chairperson

Dear Northlands Girls High School family

As the newly appointed Chairperson of The Northlands Girls High School – SGB: Greetings dear family and friends of NGHS. Thank you parents for placing your trust in me and the SGB to represent all the stakeholders at the school.

It has been a brand new experience, working closely with the management and staff to serve the school and its students, but a very rewarding one.

2024 marks the 75th Jubilee celebration of this fine establishment that has been providing quality education to young women over the years, preparing them to excel beyond the boundaries of the school.

This year promises to be the start of new projects and milestones for the school, ensuring that we as stakeholders continue to provide relevant, meaningful education to a new generation of learners.

Term 2 has been a challenging one with tests, sporting commitments and exams and yet the learners persevere and excel under the expert guidance and management of Mr Reddy and his team.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of the learners, on the sport fields and in the classroom, thank you for flying the NGHS flag so high. As we close on this term, time this time to rest, relax, refresh, and get ready for an exciting term 3.

Best wishes,
Veronica
