A Message From The Principal | MR. T.S. REDDY

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

Term 2 started with all the hype of the girls once again being able to attend the All Girls’ School Festival in Bloemfontein from 27 April 2023. The previous Festival was held in 2019. The various extramural teams that represented the school performed exceptionally well and did us proud! A big thank you to Mrs Barnard, Mrs du Toit, the various teachers in charge and the coaches for giving up their long weekend to ensure that extramurals at NGHS plays an integral part of our school.

The Mid-Year Examinations began on 29 May 2023 and ended on 22 June 2023. We had decided this year to write the DoE set papers in some subjects, in the senior grades. This unfortunately pushed the June Examination block into the last week of the term. Academic Reports for Term 2 will be handed to the girls in the first week of the third term. Please feel free to contact the Heads of Grade, should you wish to discuss any areas of concern.

Mrs T. Mkhungo, who has served at our school as the Administration and Data Capturer from 2020, will unfortunately be leaving the NGHS family to pursue her passion for teaching. Mrs Mkhungo had completed her BEd Degree while working at NGHS, and will take up a teaching post at Durban Girls’ High School. We wish her the very best in her new career.

We welcome to the Administration Department Ms TT Ndlovu, who will start in Term 3.

Joelle Francis, an ‘Old Girl’ and Maths and Accounting Intern, who joined the school at the start of 2022, has qualified with a PGCE. Joelle will start her teaching career at a neighbouring school. We thank Joelle for all her contributions to our school, and wish her well in her endeavours.

Congratulations also goes out to Mr Lunn, our Estate Manager, who married his beautiful fiancé Jess on Tuesday 20 June 2023. We wish the couple a lifetime of happiness.

The third term will be a rather ‘rushed term’ for the Grade 12s. The Preliminary Examinations begin in August, and the syllabi in all subjects will have to be completed before the Examinations begin. A winter school program has been scheduled for the first week of the holidays. Please ensure that your daughter attends these extra lessons.

Please have a safe and restful break over the next three weeks, and I will see all the girls, refreshed and back at school on Tuesday 18 July 2023.

Parents, we really do appreciate and value your continued support and co-operation.

Please Stay Safe and Healthy.

Yours sincerely
Mr T.S. Reddy

A Message From The School Counsellor

The second term of 2023 saw the completion of our University Talks to Grade 12s. Generally, Universities emphasised that learners apply as soon as possible, as sometimes-early offers are made. Grade 12s embarked on their June examinations from 29 May 2023, and we encourage them to work consistently and diligently through the remainder of the academic year. We trust that families motivate and support matriculants through this stressful period.

Dr Skye De Jonger (a local Gynaecologist – Umhlanga) and Bailey Kemp (Registered Dietician- Durban North) visited our school on 19 April 2023 and provided informative presentations to all our learners on healthy menstruation and a balanced diet for optimal energy throughout the school day.

UKZN School of Agriculture, Science and Engineering Representative -Ms Sally Frost and PHD Mechanical Engineering Student -Ms Ingrid Botha inspired our Grade 9 and Grade 10 to 12 (Pure Maths) Learners at an Assembly Presentation on Monday, 8 May 2023. Learners were enlightened on Study and Career Options within the Science and Engineering Fields. Ms Botha gave learners valuable insight into Engineering from a students’ perspective. This aligns perfectly with the introduction of Engineering, Graphics and Design as part of our subject package for 2024.

Gina Sim (a Clinical Psychologist based in Durban North) and Lynne Richards (a Masters Student in Clinical Psychology) engaged with our learners on Mental Health Awareness on 24 May 2023. Gina is passionate about working with teenagers and Lynne matriculated from Northlands Girls' High School in 2014, so the school remains close to her heart. Mental Health Stigma continues to be an area that requires focus and education. We trust that discussions around mental health continue and extend to families so that learners requiring help and support are provided with it timeously.

As we gear toward Term 3 Grade 9s have completed Career Interest Tests. Subject Choice Selection can be quite daunting for Grade 9s. We encourage learners to do as much research as possible in preparation for this process. Learners continue to be guided on how to research career and study options and requirements.

We wish our learners a restful holiday in preparation for a brand new and busy term 3 ahead.
